I'm thinking of buying a 2001 GTI GLX and was wondering what to look for as far as problems with it and maintenance. I was also wondering about the 4 cyl turbos, it seems like most of you guys have those instead of the VR6, is there a reason?
As far as maintenance on an old GTI, I wouldn't really know what to look for.
But the reason a lot of us have the (2.0) 4 cylinder turbo is because its a lot of fun to drive, its responsive, and sounds really nice. Another good perk is that you can modify a 4 cyl turbo much more easily than you can a VR6 (or now a days it would be the R32). I know some one with a 2002 GTI vr6 and he is going through the process of changing his overhead cams, adding a turbo and adding a bunch more parts just to reach 280 HP to the wheels...
In my case I went Turbo, because I just liked how it felt.
Some one will surely have a clearer explanation for you as I am not that much into modding my car, apart from the usual chip, intake and possibly exhaust... good luck
