On my lunch break today I was pulling into the local mall's parking lot to hit up Sbarro for some horribly greasy, yet fairly tasty pizza when some dumbass driving a van full of kids blasts through a stop sign at about 35mph nearly missing my right front fender. I had to lock up the brakes. First of all, the speed limit on that road (it kind of encircles the outside of the parking lot) is 20mph. Second, if your job desription involves drving a Frod 15 seater van full of kids to the mall, you may want to slow down, and pay attention to the signs posted at intersections.
After this incident I was too pissed at the stupidity people exhibit behind the wheel in this area and decided I didn't want any damn Sbarro anymore. I mean, I wouldn't really be doing the Air Force any service by screaming at this lady in front of a dozen kids and various other mall-goers while I'm wearing my uniform. So I headed to the local main drag to cruise the drive-thru's for something that looked appealing.
Since I was pissed I was kinda driving like a dick. Even more so than usual. I guess this caught the attention of one of the other drivers on the road, namely, a 20-something looking gentleman in a beat up 1980 Datsun 210 coupe. I didn't tihnk much of it until he pulled up next to me and revved his unusual sound motor. A quick glance noted that he had a set of Mickey Thompson drag radials on some rusty chrome wheels in the rear and the matching cookie cutters on the front. I knew this wasn't going to be pretty, but as I was forced to defend my honor, I revved my motor back. When the light turned green he dumped the clutch and, no shit, pulled the front wheels a good 5 - 6 inches. I tried like hell to keep up, but to no avail. Turns out he pulled into a Taco Bell down the streetm and since I could go for a Big Beef Burrito Surpreme, I decided to pull in too.
I ended up in line behind him and he told me all about his car. Turns out he's running a tri-rotor Wenkel with a pair of 18 lb Turbos and a 150hp shot of nitrous. He makes about 3 times the hp I do without the NOS. His 1/4mi ET is 11.5. After mulling over this data for a few minutes I decided if I had to lose to a POS Datsun, I wanted it to make 600hp. He co-owns a speed shop like a 5 minute walk from my house so he gave me his card. I'll probably stop in this weekend to see what kind of parts he can get me for what kind of deal. Should be interesting to see some of the other cars in his stable...
