I've got a 2007 GTI with the pizza cutter rims and recently I must have chewed up the threads at the top of the valve stem as I was pulling the pump head off the stem at the gas station such that I couldn't even put a tire gauge on it anymore. I took it to a tire store and they said that they couldn't just replace the valve stem (which is normally a $10 job) because it is connected to the TPMS, which is like a $100 part from the dealer. If I take it to the dealer they'll charge me another $70 for installing it. Do I really need to replace a perfectly working TPMS just because the stem is damaged??
