How come my GTI seems to be putting out much torque until like 6500 rpms? does anyone else experience this? also, do your guys' cars start going right away when you mash the pedal or does your car kind of rev up to about 3000 before it really takes off? Just wondering cause my car seems to be driving differently this week.
Thanks

The torque question, well after 6500 RPM i am pretty sure you're in the red.... which you should avoid unless you've been chipped.. and as far as question #2 I really don't mean to sound like an asshole, but you may very well be experiencing "turbo lag" which, although minimal on the GTI, still exists on a forced induction car. Thats about all I got for you..

Hey man,
I think it sounds like if your at 6,500 Rpm when you get torque your not in a GTI, sounds like an rx-7. I have Been warned about Driving the car hard and then shuting off right after. You need to cool it down other wise the oil gets cooked inside the turbo housing. This causes more problems than anything. I give my car about 5 minutes (when i have the time) to warm up, and about 5 minutes at idle for a cool down before i shut her off. But i have been found to be a bit of an extremist. And Turbo Lag is increased with this build up of sludge. (when nothing seems to happen when you "Mash the pedal")

For me, i plan on doing a few basic mods that i will share.
*higher budget*
* Upgrade My Turbo, Garret is Best...and add a water spray to that, just a fine mist directly on the exaust spool, you never want to cool the turbo too quickly for fear of cracking and warping, but on hard runs while the car is still running i think its fine, and at idle for about 15-30 seconds when you've parked.(not tested yet.)
*Upgrade my intercooler to front mount With water spray.(tested and reliable -seen on WRX)
* Cold Air intake.(Air is drawn in from outside the engine compartment)
*High Flow cat/Free flow ehaust of any type (i prefer no resonator)
* And Chip.
$4600 -estimate. 20-35 % power gain. with exelent reliability from heat control.

*Lower budget*

* Intercooler vent plate for the wheel well on the passenger side behind the intercooler. (water spray if budget allows)
http://www.autotech.com/prod_engine_ventplate.htm
* Cold Air Intake.
* Remove resonator and muffler/silencer and replace with after market exhaust.

Under $1000 -estimate 5-8% power gain. Better cooling of intake air than stock, better air flow overall.

GTi's have low end torque thats why at high RPM's it kind of starts to die out. this is exactly why you need horsepower to get you through. try switching yer gears earlier then redline. you should be able to hit it into a better spot where there is more torque.

Thanks for all the help, i actually meant 5500 rpms, and yeah i was wondering if that was turbo lag. dont worry about sounding like an a-hole, thats excactly what i was wondering, so thanks :) i dont drive like that all the time so thats why i cant remember if its the way the car always was or not. anyways thanks again

How likely is it that I've cooked some oil in there and gotten some buildup? i have been careful to warm the car up every time before i drive it a little hard, and i havent driven over 75% total power yet.

The turbo charger works best when it has cold air to feed off of. So if your pushing your car hard, or its just a hot day, then the turbo lag is going to be more exagerated. I would agree VeeDubbDood and get a water spray system.
