I was wonder what the best bang for my buck is to make my gti sound deeper and throatier, either adding an intake or if I had to put in straight pipes any suggestions?

With an intake you'll hear air whistle in and the PSH! when your DV let's go. Exhaust will make it sound like it has an exhaust (loud, deep throaty, whatever you want). If you're going to do all of this you might as well get a turbo back exhaust, CAI, and get chipped to actually get hp out of all of those bolt ons.

I'm trying to spend less than 200 on the exhaust system. But as for the chip I was thinking of going unitronic

If you want to spend less that $200, just do a custom exhaust at a local muffler shop
This. Straight pipe the muffler or resonator to give you a little deeper sound. Or if you want stage two just get a DP then you can go UNI stage two, slightly deeper sound with a cheap DP off ebay. You'll get a little more sound and the power to make it worth while.
