So I've owned my '06 GTI for just over 2 years now and I've spent around $3000 in repairs (granted $1000 of that was for a timing belt at 100,000 miles). This doesn't include the amount I (or all of us GTI owners) spend on synthetic oil, premium gas, and decent performance tires. For example I just spent $150 on new HID bulbs and $400 on new front breaks.
I think I'm driving a car that is out of my means and am considering buying a new to newer golf from a VW dealer and getting a nice warranty. Do you think this may be worth it? I'm not very wise as to what repairs normally cost so I call my mechanic from my hometown, who I trust, and he agrees this car may just not be manageable for me.
I LOVE this car and how it drives. It fits me like a glove and I'd rather not sacrifice all the nice features this model has but I may have to face reality. Should I keep expecting expensive repairs as this gets older? Are Golf's parts generally cheaper?
FYI - I just passed 120,000 miles. I drive it quite a bit, I put over 60k on it within 2 years.
and pick up a wrench and read a DIY thats what most mechanics have to do now with everything being so freaking complicated... all mechanics do is read from manuals on difficult tasks. any normal person that can read at an above 3rd grade level should be able to do all their own work
Brakes are one of the easiest thing to do yourself. Rent the tool from AutoZone, 50$, then return it and get your money back. 260$ for new carriers and new rotors, 50$ for new pads. New rotors alone are 150$ lol.

haha that WAS you! And thats the site I used! I got the 4300k cause thats stock and I didn't want to down grade to ****ty looking lights. ....ironic that I'm not thinking of downgrading the whole car.
By the way I test drove a 2010 Golf but they wouldn't go low enough on the price for me to make it worth it. also, NOW I HAVE AN EVAP ISSUE! haha and yes, I already replaced the gas cap. I gotta find where the leak is tomorrow.
I just get sick over how much money I pour into this car. I think I'm going to try and do a lot more DIY stuff...

I hear you. I had a 2003 Jetta TDI that was really starting to nickel and dime me. Had mine had the 5 speed manual tranny I would have kept it up but I was looking down the barrel of replacing the auto tranny in the near future so I moved up into a new GTI.
If you can wait I would see how the new Golf TDI's and GTD shake out. The performance is pretty awesome. Time will tell if the new generation diesels will be more reliable than the current ones.

I'm going to stick with this for a while I think. I did my first repair yesterday; replaced my N80 Purge Valve and breather hose due to an EVAP leak. I invested in a repair manual, I'm in it for the long haul now haha.
My battery is going now though! Anyone recommend where to get a good deal? I was just going to go to NTB or something. They're like $150 w/ install.
