The question doesn't really make sense to me.

Depends on your current speed. You wouldn't want to be in third while racing someone at 10 MPH.
Good answer, and thank you for saying it before I did.

Perhaps a better question would be - What's the ideal RPM to start a rolling race at? Choose your gear based on what speed you roll in at, but I like to be in the ~3k range. Good torque down there with the 2.0T and leaves some breathing room for the first shift.

so here's what works for me...

i start in 1st

then 2nd

then 3rd

then 4th

usually i can go straight to 6th from there lol

but if you're racing try 5th and 6th lol

im just messing with you man. i think what you're asking is what to shift down to when in a rolling race? highway going about 60-65 i would say 4, youll waste time going to 3rd for about a second,,,fourth willl pull through for a while

4th gear is best. You said from highway speeds... and most of us have a slightly faster view on what that is than the average folk. Dropping to 3rd is slow becuase of the motion, and the syncro mesh is not going to want to let you slam it in there cleanly. Once there, you will be on the backside of the power band so you will get little gain, and immediatly have to go to 4th anyway. 4th has good pull, and will carry you for a while like the last guy said. But then again, it is your car. Drop straight to red line if you want.

if your crusing @ highway speeds. dropping to fourth is more than enough. especially if ur chipped.

push for shifting motions goin from 6th to 4th is alot easier than 6th to 3rd. (jus not missshift...)
