I've got an '04, with an automatic (got married a couple months prior to picking up the vdub, & God forbid I get somethin that she can't drive! :-X ) anyhoo, I've been lookin at mine for a while now & I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it off... seems like the whole damn thing is wrapped w/ leather, but I'd like to swap it out for somethin that looks a little less domestic...
any ideas as to how to get this darn thing off?!

yeah i have a 5spd and i'd love to change the shift knob, but i'm not putting one of those super crappy autozone knobs on my car. if i had an automatic, then i use that as an excuse, "honey, the shift knob broke, so we gotta get a new tranny!" >:D

If you have a 2002, DO NOT TWIST OFF!!!! I messed up my shifter sooooooo bad by doing this. I will now have to spend hundreds of dollers to repair my shifter, because of this thread.

There are Screws that are holding the manual shifter down. You have to untwist the little bottom silver piece then you will see the screws. They are L-wrench type of screws. After you unscrew them(about 3 or 4.) I did this about a week ago and I see that people needed help. There is also this little black cyclinder thing under the shifter keep that you might need it for the knob or the new one.

I like #1. Thats a sharp looking shifter, nice and smooth. Not all cluncky. Looks as if it came in the car.
