The car:
A friend of mine is getting a black 2003 E55 tomorrow, he's going to do a Kleeman stage 1 upgrade (515 hp, 575 lb ft torque), black out the chrome grill, get the E63 bumper, black rims, black taillights etc. EXTRAORDINARILY awesome car.

The destination:
California. He lives in Austin, I live in Dallas. I want to take a friend to Austin, spend the night in Austin and leave the next day. The three of us are still undecided as to how we want to do it, so here's a couple ideas; 1. we spend most of the day in Austin, leave at around 4 in the afternoon and head NONSTOP all the way to LA 4-5 hour driving shifts, roughly a 20 hour drive, depending on our speed >:D. 2. leave Austin earllllyyyy like 4 am and drive 10 hours to Santa Fe NM, spend the night there and then next day take another 10 hour trip through arizona to LA.
Once we get to LA, we want to spend 4-5 days on the coast between LA and San Francisco, hitting the beaches etc. After this we planned on driving back through the deserts of northern Nevada, through Salt lake city utah, down to denver colorado and then back to austin (last leg is 14 hours).

Has anyone done a hardcore 10-14 day road trip like this before? How would you recommend splitting up the drives? Any scenic routes we should take or any sites to see?? Any ideas or info would be greatly appreciated.

He picked up the car today and I went to meet him. He got it at Bentley of Dallas so I had a chance to meet up with him. That car is stunning, ultra comfortable and it's absolutely the fastest car I've ever been in. Stock, it's mind-boggling, with the upgrades he's talking about doing, it will be one of the most awe inspiring cars on the road.

Anybody have any ideas about this trip?

As for the driving, definitely break it up into 3-4 hour blocks. Even if you aren't tired and feel like you can keep going, switch drivers. This will give you more endurance in the long run. I have done many long solo road trips but it takes a toll and you won't have as much fun when you get to your destination.

It sounds cheesey, but plan for some games while on the road. Playing stupid games is part of the joy of a road trip.

As for places to visit, I just don't know. I'm not from that area. But if you're into camping then that is a fun and inexpensive way to spend your nights along the way.

Have fun and enjoy that higher speed limit out there. We only get 65 here in NY.

Are you taking your GTI also, or just the E55? In any case, you should definitely take your Fast on the adventure. The E55 is definitely worthy of the company. >:D

Just the E55, anybody that's ever been in one knows how incredible it is. I love my GLI, but that E55 is in an entirely different league and I think we'll be much more comfortable in it.

My friend and i were talking about the car the other day and he wants to make it look as close to this as possible. This is an E63 in the picture, but he wants to put that E63 bumper on his, black out the grill, black rims and black taillights and debadge the whole thing. He already has tint and had me talk to the Kleeman guys at the local MB dealership, this car is going to be fast as shit.

He wants to debadge a Mercedes? There's vandals out there that'll do that for you.
I mispoke, he's going to take off the Mercedes emblem on the back, the E55 and the ///AMG, he's going to replace it with the Kleeman emblem where the Mercedes emblem was and "KLEEMAN" where it previously had E55.

To each his own.

Back on topic, does anyone else have any suggestions?

I certainly did not give you that negative karma, I only give negative karma for offensive or meaningless posts. I respect your opinion and hope you didn't take what I said personally, I didn't intend it like that.

My idea for the trip is to take your fast, and snap shots of him in all the cool spots you go. A friend of mine is a teacher and they do the same thing with a Kermit the Frog doll. Much easier than stealing the neighbors yard knome and carrying it around for the trip.

Have ideas of where you want to go and what you want to see, but not a schedule. Nothing kills a good road trip like having to check your watch all the time.

Yeah, maybe get an '03 E-500 for the price of a new GTI, but if you see a decent E55 for under $30K, please let me know.
