hi all, i'm about to get my 5 door GTI soon and i just learnt that it's made in South Africa. my dealer says that the 5 doors are made in SA, while the 3 doors are made in Germany. Just wondering if there is any noticeable difference, ie. quality wise? and i can assume the engine and all that are made in germany and "assembled" in SA? ??? grateful for any feedbacks!

I'd rather not translate that one, I'd get in trouble.
I've searched high and low, and for the life of me(and my limited intelect) I can't find it. Please translate...

My hilariously racist German grandma.

When I was a kid I'd be drinking coke from a can and she'd say (in German): "Markus, don't drink from the can, think of all the "N?ger" that have touched it.

Ahhhh, now it makes sense. Yeah, sometimes the grandparents are pretty crazy. Different times, different times. At least we like to hope so.

I took German in high school. That is totally funny! :D

There is a guy that works as a marshal at my dad's golf course that was in the Hitler Youth for the final 3 years of WWII. That guy has more pride in our country in his pinky finger than all of the politicians in Washington put together. You will want to talk about Germany with him and he will for about 1 minute and then go off on how much better the US is than Germany for the next 2 hours. Great man, I've learned a lot from him.

I'm an engineer from South Africa and the GTI's here rock. We make some of the best cars in the world and we export them. We are one of the sole makers of the C-class mercedes.
I'm getting my GTI next month and I can't wait, and what even greater is that when I spec it to what I want it doesn't take 6 months to come cause its made in SA.
In the current news we actually shifted the production of the VW polo range to make more GTIs\Golf 5's to cater for the high demand in the world.
So I would have no concerns about buying a GTI that is made in SA.

If I were you i would be greatly concerned by the products made in South Africa, if you don't believe me, read up on this forum:

http://www.hellopeter.com

and search for volkswagen south africa. You will be shocked by what you find. If I had known about the shocking quality they produce, I would NEVER have bought a VW!!

My car has rusted since 4 weeks after driving it out of the dealership, not in 1 place, but all over... there is a leak behind the dash and with the heavy rain i can see the water trickling in. I had to use a dehumidifier to get the damp out of the car! they "forget" to fasten certain things, i had no accelerator clip, nor was the coil attached to the body, but left dangling in the engine bay... after 4 reports by industry watchdogs, a representative from Uitenhage (the factory) noticed it.. but their service here is a whole other story!!!

I have been fighting with them for a year and a half and daily I am shocked by the lack of quality they deliver and the absolute complacency they show. I have emailed Germany and they refuse to do a thing, they say it is an SA issue and must be resolved here... GREAT support wouldn't you say...?

I would do a lot of research before buying a VW made in South Africa!!
Take my advice, i wish someone had done the same for me earlier.
