Anyone getting a popping noise from the front drivers side (wheel/axle???) when making a 3 point turn?

Whenever I do a 3 point turn (about 90% of the time) there is a loud pop when I turn the wheel all the way to the left and start to back up.

Has this happened to you?

Not happening to me, but its a hard thing to diagnose without witnessing it. Something I wanted to tell you though is Car and Driver did a long term test of an Audi A3 (to 50,000 miles) and the only thing that they said went wrong during that time was a universal joint on the passengers side went out. It was the only thing they said they had to replace. I know the GTI is not an A3, but they're fairly close in parts.

It can be a few things- are you running stock suspension?

I am so glad you hear that noise too. I thought I broke something. I had the dealer drive the car. I told them that it makes " a popping noise" when I accelerate and turn at the same time. The dealer did not find anything but I know it is there. I would have made it happen for the dealer but my car was being serviced for something else. The fuel pressure sensor was bad. My car had to be towed. :-(

The only thing that I can think of that is different on the drivers side suspesion is the HID leveler. I don't see how anything could be coming in contact with it or it causing a noise though.

Hell, beats the hell out of me, weird that it is only on the drivers side though ???.

we get this weird popping noise in the same area you say, but it happens in the morning when were driving to work and the engine is still cold. Never happens at the dealership due to that dam Newton and his curse of a law..................

Same thing on my GTI. Just had my 10K service and they torqued down all suspension components? Greatly reduced the noise but it is still there!!

but im sure that a service tech working for the dealership wouldnt be totally blind and miss something thats broken... if they are missing it then you need to find a new dealership to get your car serviced at...you shouldn't have to worry about them half assing that poop

For the most part....the Techs at dealerships are the best trained people on the planet with respect to the intended servicing of these machines...I think that makes them specialists....could be wrong though. It's true that some dealerships have service departments that are lacking in talent but some have Master Mechanics second to none.

You seem to spout off opinions about things that you don't really know a damn thing about quite a lot. I would suggest more reading and less posting for a while.

My car had too much HP for the stock axles. When i took my car in they put on another set of axles, and the noise started right ayay again. So i took it in again, and now i have Porshe Axles on my fast!!!!The guy said these were the only axles that could handle my horses. The porshe axles ended up costing me about $1200, and it comes with a lifetime warrenty.

Actually just had the same problem a few days ago, i took it to the dealer and they said it was the normal GTI engine noise , after a few days i could not stand the noise (it will only (rattle) around 800-1000 rpm) so i decided to fix it myself , after 1 hour of looking i found that the fuel lines that run under the car were making the noise , i taped them together and the rattle is gone .....i am really happy with my rattle free FAST
