The VW Approved Oil chart states that Castrol Syntec 5W-40 is OK. I just got back from Wal-mart and noticed I have 5W-20. I know 5W-20 is thinner than 5W-40 but will it void the VW warranty? I mean do I HAVE to use the viscosity recommended on the chart? I'd think that a thinner oil would be safe during the colder winter temps?

I posted a similar message on the DIY oil change, but want to make sure it is seen by anyone with a question on oil. I was talking with a friend that is a Master Craftsman certified by VW. He is German, and loves running his VW on the Autobahn (Passat, don't hold it against him.). He made a good point on the oil. Bottom line is "Don't deviate at all from what the manuafacturer recommends.". Use 5 - 40 Full synthetci (he recommended Castrol). Why? Your turbo spins at ~ 50,000 rpm. Think abut that for a second. Your turbo is turning almost 1000 rpm per second! I know, yeah yeah, so it turns fast... Heres the don't mess with the oil part. There are no bearings for the turbo shaft. It relies 100% on your oil to keep it from going metal to metal and seizing. the higher viscosity provides a better hydrostatic float. the oil is more expensive, but on the bright side, he said in Germany they go ~ 10,000 - 12,000 miles between oil changes (he said 20,000 kilometers). Hope this helps.

Oops. Typo. The 50,000 RPM is correct. that bay is haulin. I wnated to put that into perspective and mention that it turns at ~ 1000 per second so make that rps. But, as usual, a message with good information is posted, and there is no mention of "Hey thanks.", "I'll use that." , or even dispute the intent of the post by a "Nah your full of shit.". What I get is called out for a typo.

What is the only stupid question? The one you already know the answer to...

I think it was meant to be more humorous rather than criticism; at least that's how I took it. In any case, that really does put it into perspective. 1000 rps is quite fast. I work with turbine engines doing R&D. They typically spin over 80,000 rpm. If there is even the slightest imperfection in a blade it will throw the whole thing off balance and WHAM!, catastrophic failure!

Anyway, back on topic... I use Mobil 1 0W-40.

Sorry, don't know Royal Purple. unless they weere the ones that did the song Crystal Blue Persuasion?
Crustal Blue Persuasion was sung by Tommy James and the Shondells. Snoopy vs. The Red Baron was sung by the Royal Guardsmen. Purple People Eater was done by David Seville of the Chipmunks fame. This all must mean something!
