Well guys I am new here, looking to get into a Mk4 GTI. I have always loved these cars, but never test driven one.

I have taken out a Jetta GLI and a Mk5 GTI, so I sorta know how these cars feel.

1 quick question, did they have the Mk4 GTI in 2006? I found one on autotrader and am not sure if the new body style came out in late 2006 or what.

Well reason being for me looking to get into a GTI, my 1991 MR2 Turbo that I had been building over the period of 1 year caught on fire 2-3 weeks after being finished. Dyno'd at 270whp on a Conservative Tune to break the engine in on a 90+ degree weather day.

Took about 1 minute for it to completely reach the interior of the car, then about 10 minutes to end up like it is in the pictures.

If anyone is out looking for a new Insurance company, I suggest you look into Geico. They have been nothing but helpful and quick since this happened.

The MKIV was briefly sold as a 2006 (I believe Jan-May) before the MKV arrived.

Must have been painful to see your car burn like that - scary that the whole car caught fire that quickly.

Alright well thats what I thought about the Mk4 06'.

It wasnt painful watching my car burn, I was actually trying to sell it.

When I saw my insurance check, that is where all the pain hit me. It was about 1/5th of what I bought and put into the car. [pissed]

May I suggest the first mod be on on-board fire suppression system.

Also MkIVs are more prone to sontaneous combustion:

Yeah, I have seen this video before. Sucks to see it to.
So, did you figure out what caused the fire?

Edit: looking at the pix again... the turbo?

We think it was a GReddy Oil Line that came off the Turbo. The turbo kit was a GReddy T67, somehow they are alittle known for the oil lines breaking/bursting and splashing oil all over the exhaust manifold and catching fire.

If I had known this about their oil lines, I would have gone with someone else.

I have actually wanted a 1st gen MR2 for so long, if I dont jump into a Mk4 GTI I plan on getting into a 3rd Gen MR2 or Mazdaspeed Miata.
