I think it's a horrible comparison to pit a modded GTI against a stock STi. I once saw an AMC Gremlin with over 460HP and all the goodies to put it to the ground. That could have beaten an STi in a drag race. I'm sure you could easily get a GTI to beat a stock STi (I'd be about 100% confident with a stage 2 workup with intercooler tract, DV upgrade, and fuel pump). Question would be if the STi were modded to a similar level. If anything compare the ultimate GTI, like the R-, to an STi with the same total $$$ invested in stock+mods.

Stock STI vs. reasonably modded GTI is what I meant. I mean, obviously if you freak out and spend more than what you paid for the car, you can beat anything with any car. But at that point, we're probably talking new engines and crap.

Any reasonable amount of mods on a street legal GTI... I don't see it beating even a stock STI.

so my auto DSG is my down fall.....so i wounder if theres an up grade for it...?
Everyone seems to think the stock DSG is not capable of handling increased hp. Did this come from a reliable source or is it just hearsay? I have articles that say the stock DSG can easily handle over 300 hp. What to believe, what to believe... :-\

even after all that you telling me that my GTi will only be able to keep up with a Sti but not out run it...?
...LSD...Manual Xmission (w/clutch upgrade) or a beefed up DSG (custom gears, clutches, reflash?)

And what would you need the boost control for?
so i can control to boost...

GTI is still a better value, there are plenty of cars that cost less and have more horsepower ( Dodge neon SRT-4 for example ... 5.6 second 0-60 ) its in ALL other areas that the GTI shines ... and with mods our car can keep up or go faster than alot of the cars that are in the ballpark ( like the SRT ) a full stage 2 should put it right there.

But speaking of stock for stock, there is no way i would rather drive around Vegas in a WRX, SRT or any other japanese/american muscle car ( neon employs a mitsubishi motor ) than my gti, in fact, i was over at Sam Boyd Stadium two days ago and there was a unlv football game, i was pulling up the service road and a bunch of people were walking across the foot path and a hot chick jumped out in front of my car, wiggled her ass and flashed her purple lacy bra at me...as borat would say...Thats Nice!!!

I wonder if the Rice folk get that kind of love?

i raced a 2004 wrx on the highway we were going about 85 then i dropped it into 4th then quickly into 5th we were like neck and neck going about 120 we had to slow down cause of i 2 stupid cars taking up the lanes we were in. I think the mkv can take a wrx in the long run def not off the line cause wrx awd.
your kidding right?

well maybe the WRX has more power but its at least 10 thousand more than the GTI fort the base model next thing your gonna compare a vette to a ferrari, spend and extra 10g's on upgradeing the gti engine and turbo its also a larger engine then see what happens to your fast you too will get the same or really close ;D
If you're going to be stupid, have good reason. I only paid $1000 more for my WRX OTD vs. GTI OTD.
Hello?! On planet earth the GTI starts at $22,100 versus:
WRX TR Sedan starts at $23,995 @ 224HP
WRX Sedan starts at $24,995 @ 224HP
WRX STi starts at $33,495 @ 293HP

Now, if you're trying to tell me that the 224HP WRX can beat the GTI you're insane and you have no mental grasp of DSG. Add to this Launch Control and the challenge is laughable. Comparing the GTI to the STi is just as insane. Of course it is faster. There's is no comparison. The WRX STi costs $11,495 more than the stock 200HP GTI.

wth..your neck and neck with the new civic si and you honestly think you can take on a wrx? don't think so

don't compare a wrx sti to your gti..maybe a regular wrx because either one would spank the gti
he never said the STi... i read what you quoted and he said a 2004 WRX... which could mean a regular 2.0 liter NON-turbo charged version. Still AWD but only running about as much power as a regular RSX and a little more than a Scion Tc... so I'm sure it's no competition. Now if it was a Turbo charged.. then with the AWD it would give him a run for his money if he's DSG. And if they're both running sticks then it all comes down to the driver.

I'm pretty sure every one in the world who is a least a bit up to date with the cars in the market now, knows that a STi is pushing almost 300 HP... and isn't even in the same class...

Someone should lock this thread. Or people should quit being so ignorant and read. If you go back and reread this thread... it probably says the same thing every 5 posts including what I just posted. I just wanted to reiterate, since this thread has been inactive for a while.

My friend has a 2006 WRX (not an STI ) and the only place he could beat me was at higher freeway speeds, from a dig i killed him with launch control every time, from 30 rolls it was close till we got into higher speeds. he said the WRX launches like a dog. and it did cause i had no problems taking him off the line as long as i had a good launch.

Also...he couldnt believe how fast and how planted my GTI was in this canyon road where he lives in Denver, it was very steep and very curvy 15mph curves that we were taking at almost 45mph.

i told him to try to maintain a 3 or 4 car length distance from me and by the end i was always about 10 ahead.

Im not sure if he was a bad driver but i doubt it... he drove mine and said that it was an amazing car and he confirmed everything i said on the launch control that it was way better than the regular WRX.

Food for thought

My buddy bought an 06 TR edition. He was told to launch it at 5k and everytime he does it just walks on me from a stop... I hit 2nd gear and i sit almost door to door tho... =/ Granted I own an mkiv with pretty low numbers (intake and cat-back) and he has a cat-back as well it still remains a toss up for who wins, mainly the driver between us... I'd love to get an mkv with dsg and see how it stands from a stop...
