Re: MKIV GTI/GLI 1.8T PCV Delete/Catch Can Install & Brake Booster Mod

Nope no downside .... keeping the pics system leaves u open to several vacation leaks and headaches tracking it down and fixing it .

Re: MKIV GTI/GLI 1.8T PCV Delete/Catch Can Install & Brake Booster Mod

If ur engine has a positive pressure pushing oil up thru ur put u have more serious issues than if a can will hurt anything .... but no quit being scared ... mk4s have been out for 14.5years now ... they have kinda been tried and tested and have almost no new surprises to be found.

U can actually do what this guy did on his r32 as well... just run hoses straight to the ground &not use a can. .. this is how I'm doing my supercharged R32

So I assume the pcv is to stop positive crank pressure then. What causes the positive crank pressure?
It's just my car is a daily driver so I don't want to **** a rod or anything. Lol

Dude ... run a line from the valve cover to the can and from the top of the oil filter housing to the can. Call it a day, drain it every other week or so and enjoy deleting about 20 potential vac leaks

Re: MKIV GTI/GLI 1.8T PCV Delete/Catch Can Install & Brake Booster Mod

Just saw your awesome D.I.Y. I'm going to do this next to my 20th. I have a simple question. I like to use the same catch can. If you dont mind. What kind is the catch can and where did you get it?

Re: MKIV GTI/GLI 1.8T PCV Delete/Catch Can Install & Brake Booster Mod

Hi, let me help you out a bit here.

You want a metal catch can first off, with 2, or 3 ports. The reason we do this delete/mod is to get rid of the old brittle and rotten rubber/ plastic units used in this system. The catch can should have some sort of multi level filter inside to actually stop the material in the vapor, otherwise the can is pointless and acts more like a vacuum resivoir. There are two types of Catch Cans, VTA(Vent To Atmosphere), and Recirculating.
-The Recirculation Can will have 2-3 ports leading in and out of the can. In the end, it will lead back into the "black hockey puck" location which is where it re-enters the intake stream for burnoff.
-The Vent To Atmosphere Can will look like the same style of setup but will utilize a filter on the top to eliminate the extra hose to the "Black Hockey Puck" location. This
allows for elimination of bad vapors and is my fovorite style. It can get messy though depending on how often you empty your can, and how much blow-by vapor your engine produces.

Both cans will have to be emptied regularly as goop/gunk will build up from airborne oil vapors. Some people run the Catch Can drain from the bottom of the can back into the oil pan. Others drain and dispose. It's up to you on how you set it up.
Is there any negative effects to using a sealed oil catch can in this exact same configuration? I dont wanna sniff oil fumes its my daily driver....

no .. people do it either way ( vent to atmosphere like i did . or recirculated )... the only difference is how u route the lines if u arent deleting the PCV system ... if u do delete it then u run it like i did one line from the valve cover and one line from the oil filter housing . if u dont delete it then u run a line from the hockeypuck in the inlet pipe to the can instead of the line from the valvecover .

Thanks for the advice, I ended up researching it heavily after posting that and ended up with this below. I'm nowhere near being done I bought it a few weeks ago and have been replacing the broken vacuum hose especially all the small ones around the n249 valve which I ended up bypassing. I noticed my diverter valve dumps while rolling out my driveway when not under any load. It's hard to explain, it's like it's sounds the same as when your brake rotors are wet and it kind of makes that grinding sound but not high pitch. Only it's definitely coming from my diverter valve. Sorry if this is basic I'm new to gti's and vw in general. Always been a sport bike guy but wanted a fast little car to mess with... Still need a few hose clamps but you get the point. I ended up modding the sick speed Amazon catch can with 5/8 inch inlets instead of the 3/8 ones on it.

It's a Photobucket problem. They no longer offer free hosting.

Teh Chris is still around, so he might be able to upload the pics again.
