Hey, just thought I'd share with you guys that I just lowered my fast with Neuspeed sport springs.

Most importantly, I'd like to point out a few tips while changing the springs.

First off:

THe rears are easy, real easy. Only takes about 10 minutes to do both sides (excluding lifting the vehicle up). On a lift you only have to remove the outer 18mm nut and bolt on the control arm. Make sure you have a deadman under the control arm before removing the bolt. Simply lower the deadman, remove factory spring, insert new spring and jack deadman to original position. Retorque 18mm nut and your finished.

Fronts are a little trickier. First off remove the wheels. Next place the wipers in service mode, remove the 2 13mm nuts on the wipers, remove wipers carefully, remove the cowl (careful not to snap the cowl) then remove the top 3 13mm strut top bolts.

Lift the vehicle to chest height and remove the 3 16mm nuts from the bottom of the steering knuckle. Remove the 18mm nut on the top of the knuckle holding the bottom of the stut, you'll need a speciallty spline socket (sorry but I forget how many mm it was, I think it was 9mm or so but I don't remember) and remove the 10mm nut attached to the bottom of the level sensor rod. Before removing the strut, mark the original position of the strut top mount with some touch up paint. Spray the strut with rust penetrator or lubricant, pull the lower control arm down and shimmy the strut up. Fiddle around with it until the strut pops out of the knuckle.

Use a spring compressor on the spring and compress it enough where the strut is free, then remove the 21mm nut on the top of the shock. Remove the boot and strut top mount, place new spring on shock and install boot and strut top mount. You won't need a spring compressor, just have a buddy push down on the spring and torque down the top 21mm nut.

Reinstall in reverse order and make sure to retorque all nuts and bolts carefully.

Now enjoy a tighter ride and more appealing look.

Hope this is a helpful!!

hows the ride compared to stock?
After driving for a day, the ride seems real good. Stock is pretty impressive but with just springs you can see a little bit of a difference. On a nice set of s turns by my house I seem to have excellerated my exit speed by a approx. 5-10mph. Not too sure, I know that before I was in 2nd gear @ 45-- rpms, with the springs I'm now just between gears.

Also, the ride is surprisingly smooth. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference from stock on straight roads.

It looks great, drastically reduced wheel gap but not slammed so it makes it difficult to manuver around town in and out of places.

Hey keebs,
You have any pics of your ride after the springs??
Tryin' to decide still between Neuspeed, H&R, and Eibach's sportline springs.. can't decide if 1.4-1.5ish is good enough or if I should drop 'er the 1.8-1.6...

i actually spoke to the one of the managers at my dealer and he said that if you have the springs installed by a VW Dealer and order them from VW buying OEM parts that it would not void the warrenty in that way it may be a little more expensive though but better than loosing a warrenty i also believe that they are eibach springs not sure which year or how much maybe $360 give or take plus install try going to a VW dealer to find out

this is where VW makes business come into play

my dealer said i could lower it for around $1400...then it won't void the warranty. FUCK THAT!

i'm just gonna get it lowered with springs from the internet, eibach or someshit, for around $200 and get it installed at my cousin's shop for a small fee. then if i ever need to take it in for service, i'll put the stock ones back on.

customer's always right.

New VW Dealer told me today that if I brought in the lowering kit, they'd drop my gti for about $400, no warranty void. He's done 3 or 4 already. My questions;

Anyone who has lowered, do you regret it for any reason? Any problems at all from lowering? My gti is a daily driver and I do about 4K miles a month. I can't afford to have troubles.

Which lowering kit? How much drop? :)

Sorry for the basic questions. I've never dropped a car before, but this gti really begs for it I think.

thanks,

I use mine for a daily driver as well. I went with the Eibach sportline for maximun drop with minimum expense. I'm still running on stock shocks. The ride is still fantastic. Took my 75 y.o. dad for a ride and he said the car just plain feels solid. It absolutely rocks on the track with this set up. I was able to hunt down and pass a C06 vette on a track weekend back in September. My only real concern is if we get a deep snow combined with the lack of ground clearance. My G wagen should be road worhty soon enough though.

with the winter set up

snow filled wheel wells

and finally, the big project

I have the Neuspeed Pro Cup kit installed on mine. It comes with the same springs mentioned earlier but also includes Koni FSD shocks and struts. Install was really easy (except the removal of the strut from the hub assembly was NOT as easy as stated..lol) but definately worth the effort. The car handles SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better and still feels comfortable. Read about the FSD technology it's worth it and true to every word. I do not regret lowering it at ALL. Oh it drops it about 1.5 inches. I don't have pics up of it lowered yet but I will soon. I love it...really makes my Fast...faster. lol

i have the H&R cup kit on my GTI and it is great. i drive 100 miles round trip to work and though it is a bit stiffer on the freeway going 80mph, for city driving it almost feels like stock, even with a 2.2" drop in front and a 1.6" drop in the rear. i had a friend who is a tech at my VW dealership help me install the kit and all of the sales guys kept coming into his bay asking when we'd be done. supposedly i was the first mkV they had there that had been dropped.

the H&R cup kit is a matched set of progressive springs and stiffer struts that were designed to work together. honestly, given my shoice of any kind of suspension, the only two companies i would ever go with are bilstien (i was looking at the PSS9s when i was in the market for coilovers before i decided to go with a cup kit) and H&R.

i'll post pics in a day or so...

So what's the verdict on this setup up from ECS?

This is the H&R sport spring and Blistein combo for about $800. I guess if I'm going to do it, I'd like to do it just once, shocks, struts and springs. Any thoughts? Also, doesn't that new Fahrenheit GTI come with Bilsteins? I think you can get the springs only for about $199.
