Hello everyone!

I am new to this forum -wave-. I currently drive a 2002 VW Jetta TDI. No mods. I love it to death and enjoy the mpg, but it is now time for me to move on and have fun with a quicker turbo. O0

The GTI came to mind, since I don't plan on leaving VW soon. I'm interested in a 2011 2-door GTI, standard trans. I plan on modding the GTI and goofing around. Is there anything I should know about it before I buy? This will also be my first standard, but I've heard/seen that it is pretty simple to get used to.

From what I've read on these forums is that they're a blast to drive, and that makes me excited!

For those who mod, is it easy to change out parts? Obviously it depends on what you're changing out, but it's just out of curiousity.

How about vendors online, any particular brands I should buy/stay away from?

Also, being a current VW owner, I know the stories about the "crayon smell" and the plastic breaking easily in the interior. Did they fix that with the newest GTI's?

Any other comments or advice would be helpful! Feedback appreciated greatly. ;D

Good choice. Personally, I find modding these cars to be pretty easy. Of course like you said it depends on what your doing (clutch job can be a bit of a pita)...

I swear I replied to this earlier but I guess IE didn't go through. ...

Thank you for the websites!

By the way, the smell I speak of was in the older models of VW Jettas.. I think it was an adhesive or something for the interior. Mine doesn't have the smell but I was just curious bout the GTI 'cause I've never owned one lol.

Have you been caught in heavy traffic with your GTI? (I'm assuming you drive a manual)
If so ... Does it suck? lol

Thanks! BTW, nice " ô¿ô ". I know the alt codes for that haha.

I drive from northern VA around DC into MD every day. I'm always sitting in stop and go traffic and yes it sucks. At times I wish I had an automatic but as soon as I get out on the open road those thoughts fade quickly. The stock clutch is very smooth and doesnt have a lot of resistance on the pedal, making it a little more manageable. Unfortunately, between the extra HP and traffic everyday I had to replace my clutch at 30k miles with a Stage 2 racing clutch. Im sure traffic will kill that eventually to but hopefully I'll get more than 30k out of it. Dont let the traffic thing prevent you from a manual if thats what you really want, like I said the added HP/Torque on my car probably contributed to the clutch dying just as much as the traffic did.

Best advice I can give is go give it a test drive, see what you think. Keep in mind, if its not fast enough for you it can be made to be a lot quicker 8)™

Yeah, I hear ya. I never sit in traffic much anyways, just when I leave town and hit the rush hour. Just askin' questions, lol.

I test drove it a while ago and was really impressed by the no turbo lag! I'm also amazed how light this thing is. With the weight differential and a few mods, the GTI can take on the new Camaros stock, right? Hopefully the new Mustangs too, lol.

Been browsing on the forums all day and haven't seen anyone really talking about any problems with their MKVI GTI, so that's a good sign!

Still a little too new to tell any major issues. They used the TSI engine which was the second engine for the MKV's which worked out a lot of the bugs. Thats what warranty is for...

for the crayon smell issue, you should have no trouble. they fixed that a while back, none of the MKV or VI have it

Well, in my opinion ... 3023 pounds for the curb weight as stock is light. But I'm a noob, so my opinion doesn't matter, right? -sigh- lol

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I really appreciate it!

Driving standard is the way to go. I live in southern california so I am stuck in traffic a lot, and I still dont miss an auto. Manual is better to tune on, you dont have to worry about an expensive auto like the dsg acting up, and you are always in control over your engine. Some love the dsg, I think its cool, but I hear the novelty wears off and you are stuck wishing you had a manual. I have an 05 gti 5 spd manual, the only thing I wish I had is a 6 spd now standard on VW's. After a short time of getting used to manual, you brain will just do it and you dont have to think about it. Heavy you say, yes absolutely she is a heavy one which you feel when throwing into turns or just getting it off the line. This is why the 200hp only gets you up to 60mph in 6.8 seconds. But I love my interior which after almost 6 years refuses to make any noise, squeeks or rattles, and still for the most part looks as good as when I purchased her in 06. Fun, safe, quick little car
