Insurance Discussion

I pay my auto insurance semi-annually, and it went from ~ $1300/yr on a lease that required additional coverage to my current quote of ~ $1800/yr on straight-up financing. I called State Farm to ask what the hell happened, and my rep told me since the GTI is so rare, collision coverage went through the roof. I think that portion of the coverage alone is like $900/yr.

Did anyone else get insurance sticker shock? Perhaps list your (1) carrier; (2) yearly payment; and (3) whether there is something else in the equation that caused the spike (e.g. multiple collisions in the last couple of years).

Re: GTI Insurance

Try some insurance bundling... For instance, when I purchased my renter's insurance for $25/mth, my car insurance dropped by nearly $75/6 mths. When I added disability, it dropped even more... when I got the Fast, it went back up! LoL
Re: GTI Insurance

Insurance on my old car dropped in half when I turned 25, but mostly cause I switched companies. The old insurance company wanted to keep charging me more or less the same (1650/a when the company I switched to only charged $850).
Re: GTI Insurance

Just an FYI. My alumni discount at Liberty Mutual is probably a similar program to you GPA. Look into it at other companies. $1100ish/year for me.

Ouch! Does your insurance agent know it's not a Bugatti and it's a VW. That is insane.

Insurance doesn't even cover Bugatti, but even if it did, it would be under VW anyways, because Volkswagen owns Bugatti.

Just showing off. :p

That's not accurate. First, pay enough and insurance companies will cover anything. Second, just because Bugatti is owned by Volkswagen doesn't mean it'd show ans VW. Infinitys don't show as Nissans and Lexus's/Scions don't show as Toyotas...

^^^^^

Couldn't said it better myself ;D
Re: GTI Insurance

You cought me on that second part. I wouldn't know, I don't pay for my own insurance.

But on one of the episodes of Top Gear, they tried to get a quote for insurance for the Veyron and they couldnt even find it. It's not in any of their computer systems.

Maybe it's different here in the US, I don't know.
Re: GTI Insurance

He might have a point, that Bugatti is so rare a brand that it gets classified under VW by some insurance companies.
Re: GTI Insurance

It wouldn't surprise me if a large percentage of the Veyron deliveries are wrecked within 48 hours. This seems to be a problem with Ferrari and Lamborghini deliveries.

On the other hand if you're droppin' a million plus on a car you might just park it in your living room and never drive it and just look at it.

I can't even fathom what the monthly premium is on that car. Probably about the price of a Civic. I'm sure they would make you sign some sort of an agreement if you were found driving in excess of the speed limit and wreck they are not responsible.
Re: GTI Insurance

I saw that same Top Gear episode you're talking about, however there are insurance companies specifically for collector/exotic cars. I agree with Dr. Jones, if you pay enough, you'll get insurance for it.
Re: GTI Insurance

you can buy anything with money in this day and age. there is always someone willing to give insurance to extremely expensive cars. for one reason usually they are older fellas who buy them just for show and not to rip down the highway at 150+.
Re: GTI Insurance

What a shame it is... owning the most kickass cars in the world, only to let them rot.

It's a crime, or it should be.
Re: GTI Insurance

200 clams a month here in Boston. The Commonwealth of Assachussets has decided to control auto insurance as well as hire the most incompetent morons to work for the Registry of Motor Vehicles. No use trying to get the insurance companies to do battle. I'd pay the same amount anywhere. My insurance company also lists the '06 GTI as a 1.8T. Probably less expensive that way but I thought it was just a little weird.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Freddie, but that's because technically the MkV's are a mid-year release. There were some MkIV 2006's made.
Re: GTI Insurance

Yeah dude, you insured the wrong model. If your car gets wrecked they'll replace it with a MkIV.
Re: GTI Insurance

Thanks Thalo. Call to insurance company just got moved to top priority on tomorrow's agenda.
