When I shift into third it makes an awful grinding noise as if I am not using the clutch. However, if I shift before about 2500rpms it does not grind. After doing research and looking around I've come to the conclusion that it's the synchro and started calling places in the area to get quotes. From what I've found most places want to just completely replace the transmission because it needs to be pulled out anyway. Only the Volkswagen dealer said that they might rebuild it but will have to look at it first for a few hundred bucks. I was going into this not expecting to have to pay any more than 7 or 800 dollars but it sounds like it's going to be at least $1500-$2000 due to the labor. Has anyone else had a similar issue and how much did it end up costing to fix it? For now I'm either shifting early or just skipping third but that's gotten old pretty quickly. I'm currently in Albany NY but will be going back to school in the buffalo area in a few weeks and I am hoping I can get possibly some better quotes out there.

What year and how many miles ? I have on 07' with just under 80k on the clock. I do not get grinding but shifting is notchy for 2nd & 3rd gear and I assume will only get worse going forward. Did you fix it ? what was the issue ? I bought a manual tranny because they were more reliable and less costly then auto's ha ha. My stupid mistake.

I had the same issue in 5th gear after 6-8 months i bought the car. Something completely weird. Since my car was new the replaced the whole tranny. The problem started after i put the car on the track for the first time... interesting enough, i did nt even get to use 5th gear in a 1/4 mile... anyway, they called a VW specialist, tried to blame the stage 1 ECU mod... but in the end it looked like a manufacturing issue. I have a '13 model btw. Bad thing is that i had to go back after a month or so since i was getting some crazy noise in reverse... clutch was all **** too... my case: they replaced both parts. Transmission and clutch.

After that i went to a Stage 2+ and so far no slipping on the clutch and no issues on the tranny. Knock on wood here!!!
