[Displacement]

Anybody really good at this and have some advice? I did it once on a sweeper by my college using some trail braking and letting off the gas late, but I only had it that once.

The reason why this belongs in the "I got in trouble" forum - I tried to duplicate it going the other way in the sweeper, went in with the same speed, but didn't think about the fact that the other direction was a tighter radius... oops. I wound up facing the other direction (facing the right way and away from any cars on the road, the streets were empty) hahaha it was a rush for sure

Definately a rush, and something I wouldn't recomend on public streets. There are plenty of racetracks around where a person can play without endangering themselves or others. That said, I haven't been in a front driver for a while, but if memory serves me, the technique is to lift off the throttle once you turn into the corner. Make sure that the ESP is switched off, or the back end will never come around. Maybe I'll try it in my work parking lot next time it snows.

RWDs are of course the easiest to drift. Some "purists" believe that a FWD doesn't drift but instead drags. I've drifted many cars including FWDs. When you are in a four wheel drift I can guarantee that you are not draggin' the car.

Well... On my Neon (yes, I've got a Neon lol) the only way I can actually 'drift' (on dry pavement) is if I'm going pretty fast. With the big rear sway bar, it's WAY easier. However, it likes to SNAP back... which is not fun. The back end will release at the weirdest moments, also. Maybe I just don't have enuf knowledge to control it, but I have enough experience with the car to hold it riiiight on the edge, and that only got better when I went to a roadcourse. I had a Viper owner hanging on (but he was having fun) for dear life as I went balls-out into the corners, right on the verge of spinning out in each one. (note: learning experience = broken car parts :-[)

My personal FWD drifting preferences:
-Big rear sway bar, small front
-Inflate the rear tires more than the fronts, that gives you LESS of a surface area on the rears
So it's this: U
Instead of this: |_|
Reduced surface area = less traction = more sliding (dry pavement)
-SNOW. haha snow is always good!

If anyone has anything else or needs to correct me, go for it, I am by no means an expert, this is just what I've found works with my car.

Anything from old 124 Fiat Coupe Sports to an Enzo. I've had 13 different VW's and most of my driving is unfortunately in Mustangs (don't ask!). I attended the first ever D1 drift contest in the USA and drove a rented V6 Mustang in the show. But, I don't suggest "practicing" on the streets. Cars are too heavy and too fast to mess with while other people are around and not under control.

You wouldn't happen to be a trainer at Bondurant's would you? I know he used to use mustangs at some of his schools, don't know if he still does.

LOL..... I bet it beats working. ;D I had a sneaking feeling, the tip off was when you said most of your driving was in Mustangs. It's an honor to have you here. Do you have any tips you could pass along to the enthusiasts wanting to get a little extra driving enjoyment out of their cars?

from my experience, and my friends, most people with FWD attempt drifting by using the handbrake. this will get you into a drifting motion, as it will break traction on your rear wheels and pull the rear around. HOWEVER, this is done by locking the wheels, and can cause flatspots in your tire tread! I have a friend with a civic that insists on handbrake drifting occasionally, and his tires wear in a horrible way.

Personally, I think drifting is best left to front engine-rear drive cars. Besides, it's meant to be a show-off/having fun way of driving, so if you're actually racing it's mostly impractical.

1st one was a jetta.... lets just say he is lucky the car is not totalled and only needs a pant job and some work done under the car from bushes.
2nd one was my sisters friend. he had a GTi.. keyword there was HAD cause it is now smashed face first into a tree and totalled....
drifting with FWD cars... leave it to the RWD's. TAKE YER CORNERS FAST! but dont let the tail whip out too far.... of course unless its raining or snowing >

I'm telling you guys... The BEST car that I've ever drifted (and we're talking about 100's of miles sideways) was a FWD Ford Taurus SHO. The most fun car to drift, you couldn't go wrong with it. Believe me when I say that I've drifted a lot of cars.

Playing with my cars completly stock set up while at the 10 autoX events i have attended this year i have learned.


this car does not need a rear sway to have the ass catch the front.

I'm running Hankook K106's and over 45 lbs in the rear makes them a lot more likley to break.

Pull the spare and everything else outta the trunk and it will lighten up the back end dramaticaly.


In autox i am actualy fighting the cars tendency to break loose in everything except carelsel turns. And i only let it slide on those cause its fun as hell. So i am far from an expert on drifting, just thought that might help.
