Ok, maybe this is a stupid question, but when the battery dies for whatever reason ::) , the hatch seems to lock itself and you cannot unlock it because there is no manual way of doing so. ...of course, one would think that the logical place to keep jumper cables would be in the hatch someplace, right? ...   so....

very good question but you'd have to climp in the back and releas the hatch it has a button on the back that you either push or pull to release it open
It does? From the inside? That would make sense, but I didn't find this button. Of course, I didn't look in the manual yet either.

The information for that is in the owner's manual. There is indeed a manual release, but it has a plastic cover over it that I think you have to pry off. Check the owner's manual before you go pulling on things though.

yes but if the battery is dead than the "unlock button" under the arm rest will not work
That should not be so. I had my batteries die on both remotes but i had no problem opening it from inside.
was that using the Unlock Button under the arm??

We're talking about the car battery, not the batteries in your remotes ::)

Had to look this up two days ago when I left my lights on and the battery died. My jumper cables were under the rear floor! The GTI has a manual release for the rear lid that you access from inside the car. Pull the round trim piece off (there's a finger hole that makes it easy). Poke a finger inside and feel for a little lever on the right. Push it to the right. Viola, lid opens.
