Users of myfastgti I could really use your help. I have a 92 GTI 8v with about 45k miles and she's been having a few problems recently. I've been able to deal with them, save this one clacking noise. I will provide as many details as I can.
The sound comes from the front of the car, I think the right. I have been unable to recreate the sound in the garage even when putting it in gear, so it only happens when under weight load. There are two noises, one is more of a clicking noise that has been there for a long time whenever I go over an amount of slight bump; very annoying. The other is a newer development, and only happens when the brakes are cold. It is a clacking noise, changes with the speed of the vehicle and persists when the engine is off. Again it only happens when the brakes are cool, so after about 10 minutes of driving without using them, the sound returns.

The strange part: When I apply the brakes ever so slightly, hardly enough to trigger the brake lights, both sounds completely disappear. I recently replaced the pads, rotars, the CV, and longer ago, the front shocks, but these noises were around prior to these repairs. I have shook and rattled every imaginable part on the hub, control arms, etc, but have not been able to find the noise. So as I said I don't think it's the rotars, pads, cv, or shocks, but I could be wrong. I have the sneaking suspicion it is the brake mounting bracket, but I'm not sure.

I am going insane with these sounds, they're loud, annoying, and embarrassing. I would be very appreciative of any help your collective brilliance has to offer. I will be happy to offer up any additional details

have you changed the control arm bushings?
the only think i can think of is when you hit a bump and it rattles or clanks the top nut on the strut might not be tight enough. pop the hood grab a air or electric ratchet and see if that nut is not tight enough. and also check your motor mounts. that might be a clicking or clanking noise..

this is exactly what I was thinking,
also the cold braking noise could be the pads themself or how they are held into the caliper. I would also suspect the caliper mounts.

The random clicking is definitely from the front right, and I know that noise, this it is not. I'll take a look at the mounts, thanks!
no problem
