Clicking Noise in passenger right rear near gas tank

I have a 2009 GTI with 2,000 miles on it and have been hearing this intermitted loud clicking noise near the right rear area of my car. Sounds kind of like a turn signal clicking noise or a clock ticking noise but it's not a uniform steady noise and mainly does this when the engine is cold and I'm about 2 blocks away from my house in the morning. The clicks vary in speed...sometimes faster and sometimes slower clicking. I suspect it might be a fuel pump noise. Anyone else experience this?

It might be a fuel line rattle or something. There was a recall about that 1 or 2 years ago.
These clicks are uniform in sound, like a fast clicking clock that varies every 1/2 to 3/4 of a second between clicks and last for about a minute, then it goes away. Very strange.
I would honestly bring your vehicle in for service. Clicking would annoy the **** out of me.
I've also heard this noise sometimes. It isn't the fuel line rattle, it's too uniform for that and that usually comes from under the glove box area and there is a TSB that dealers have to resolve it. I read somewhere that it is either a fuel pump or antilock brake noise. It usually only happens on my car when it is cold(as in colder weather)while I am stopped and idling with the brakes on and the car hasn't warmed up yet. Doesn't last long and happens only briefly after start up. Sorry I don't have any more info on it, but it's always been there and at close to 20k there's been no problems. Maybe I'll ask the dealer when I go in for the 20k service and see what they say.
Good info and validates my noise. I take it in for the 5K service soon so I'll let them keep it and look at it. Will keep everyone posted on what I find. Thanks.
I have the same issue, Only happens when its cold and only when im stopped (at least I can only hear it when im stopped). Please do keep us updated as I wrote it off as normal activity and if there is a TSB ill take it in. 09 GTI btw
Yup, it's fuel lines bumping. Understand that with a direct injection motor such as the 2.0T, the fuel is being pumped into the motor at appx 1400-1700 psi. It just tends to pull on your lines a little bit, causing them to tap in tempo!! not a big deal, though if you can't stand it, take it to the stealership.
Fuel system leak check

That very well could be perfectly normal. It is part of the evaporative emissions controls, checking for fuel system vapor leaks each duty cycle.
There is a pump that is pressurizing your fuel system. It operates pretty much the way you describe. It pumps a short time to achieve a set pressure and then stops. It typically sounds like its coming from the right rear corner.

If the pump can not acheive and maintian a set pressure, it will determine there is a leak in the system and turn on your "Gas cap" indicator, as that is the most common cause.

I typically hear it shortly after starting out and occasionally during refueling. My Mk IV did the same thing, although a leak triggered a CEL on the Mk IV instead of the dedicated gas cap indicator found on the Mk V.

The typical fuel line rattles emanate from more to the front below passenger floor or slightly forward of that. Often they can be traced to accel / deccel / engine rocking and will occur repeatedly.

The fuel pressurizing is unrelated to driving and usually occurs when starting out.

I have this exact same noise. 09 GTI w/DSG. I've got 3000 miles so far and I will ask about this when I take it in for 5000 mile check up. But, as mentioned, the noise goes away within a minute of starting up when the engine is cold, so I'm not too worried about it. Thanks for the info.
sup robb, ok i had a similar click in my '08. its probably the button system to let the back seat down, its a common problem apparently. first let the back seats downand drive around and see if makes the sound, if not it is the seat clasp. to fix it let the seat down then take a hammer and carefully tap the metal ring that the seat latches to in order to bend it down so that it adds pressure on the seat clasp and keeps it from rattling. worked for me, hope this can help.
My seats are always in the down position unless I have passengers back there, which is never, and it still makes the noise. Remember, this is a short term very uniform loud clicking when engine is cold about 2 blocks from my house, so don't think it's a seat rattle. Thanks for the info though. :)

Based on all your responses I know it's a common problem and I'll have it checked out at my 5K service and let everyone know what they say. Everyone else do the same and hopefully we can get VW to acknowledge and fix the issue.

Love the car!

Rob
Just started hearing the same thing in my MK6 2010 GTI with 16XX miles.

Will also take it to the dealership next time I have time available to check it out.
I have the same issue with my MK6 GTI (2010) with DSG. Usually about 1-2 blocks when I am stopped at a light I can hear the ticking...at first I thought it was someone hammering from a construction site in the distance...that is what it sounds like, very uniform too. If anyone figures out what the official cause is please post it. I haven't had any issues...its just annoying!
I'm getting a ticking noise but near the front right passenger side
I've got a 2002 337 and I have the seats in the back pulled for an audio setup right now. I have the clicking very often. It almost sounds like the fuel pump is trying to cycle and is dying or something. I'm over 120,000 miles and wonder if I should just replace it with a wahlbro high pressure one. Is this a common noise maker for our rides?

It's not really a rattle like a busted part those. It's more of a tick like if a pump was having issues pumping...

Flash back to salt n' peppa. Pump, pump, the jam
Mine does it too, specially on cold mornings, no problems though.
Both my MkV did it and my MkVI does it. Perfectly normal.
