havnt drivin my car in about a month, and will be out of town for about 4 months, when i toke my car around i couldnt get it to rev above 4000, it will it 4000 then sputter. i did it in the first few mins of it being on and in N. any ideas what it could be ???

I've never tried to rev it that high in N, but I wonder if the limiter might realize you're in neutral and think, "why are you trying to rev so high?" Maybe I'll give it a stab and see what happens.

mine does the same thing. if its in Park though it will rev to whatever you want it to... quite weird but i guess its just a saftey feature so you dont blow yer engine.

I'm not saying that this is what is going on with your car but... a lot of cars today won't let you rev the motor unless it's underload (i.e. in gear and moving). It is a safety feature so that you don't pop your motor in your driveway. Again, I don't know if this is what's going on with yours....(I hate disclaimers)

i have been working on cars for years and yes it is a safety feature. i had to find out the hard way when i was racing my 2000 chevy montey carlo ss i had a 500 bet on a civic saying he could beet me and when i got to the line i reved up and i herd that and i quit so i did not blow the engine so accordling to the rules we came up with i lost but o well i cam back a couple of days later and got min and his money back when i found out that that is what it was

just to let you know if its in park you can let it rev higher. just not in neutral.

Exactly. In Neutral it won't let you rev that high.

Anyways, dunno if this will help. i havea 6 speed, and regretably i have dumped my clutch at 6900 rpms. needless to say I dont have the 4k redline in neutral?

You can't rev past 4000 in neutral. Try it in P and it should go higher. Or better yet, try it while driving.

The reason you can't rev past 4K is to protect the transmission, VW doesn't want you to rev up then slam it into drive. The engine is not hurt by high revs, unless you hit 15K or something like that. This is only for the DSG, the 6 speeds should not have this problem. It is limited by computer and can be removed, i would not advise doing so.

Second, all the new automatic GTIs have launch control.

Buy a stick or use the launch control... please don't neutral drop a GTI.[suicide]

Have an 09 gti 6 speed and cant rev past 4000 rpms has to be in gear with handbrake off and clutch engaged!!

With a 6sp and ESP enabled you cant rev past 4k until your moving, even if your in gear with the clutch in you cant rev past 4k aka wanna be launch control. With ESP turned off you can rev to the moon with the clutch in but i think in N you'll still be limited to 4k.
