Brake booster vacuum hose fail - need advice

So, on my '08 FSI motor, a brake booster vacuum hose was dry, cracked, and leaking. (Part 1k0612041kc), I bought the $52 replacement, and got the brake booster end of the hose detached just fine...

The other end, which I don't know what it is actually attached to, is now ruined, as I broke the nipple off while wrestling with the hose end.
(Trying to share pictures, but it's a tight fit).

Feeling really screwed right now.

1.) What did I break!?
2.) What needs to be replaced now?
3.) What are the odds I'm taking this to the shop?

I'm clearly not a mechanic, but I'm relatively patient and can follow directions. I just haven't found much information yet, and after breaking that piece off, it's safe to say I'm worried about my fate.

Thanks for any help.

Oooh man, this was a few years back, and I don't remember the steps or process. I do know I got through it and I am not that savvy. I feel like Youtube never let me down with the GTI also. Sorry I can't be more helpful here right now & best of luck!
