Bi-Xenon Shutters?

7505 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Thalo
A) Does the 2007 GTI have shutters on the Bi-Xenon lights?

B) How do they work?

When I turn on the lights it's like a curtain is lifting and the lights go from the ground out to level with the headlights.

C) Why does it do this?

D) Are the shutters closed when the car is off?

They are auto-leveling my friend.. its basically a scan to determine if you are hauling weight, and if they need to be pointed more towards the ground etc. Plus its also a system check to ensure they are functioning thru their entire range of motion.. Go over a speed bump real slow.. you will notice they angle down to avoid blinding other drivers. As far as the mechanism that allows the movement? I am going to guess at reflectors more than shutters directing the light, but thats just a guess. Hope this helps
i believe that when you put yer brights on the headlights just move upward... am i correct?
I'm pretty sure that the other (bright) bulbs come on. I don't think the main xenons move up.

Yup they do. Not sure how it works exactly but when the lows are on it blocks the lights above a certain level. When brights are on it opens the Xenons up all the way, which is what lead me to think there were shutters involved.

The only time the secondary lights (the ones closer to the grill) come on is when your headlights are turned off and you pull the lever back to flash your brights. These lights are there because it gives you instant light for flashing as opposed to the xenon that takes a second to come to full brightness.
This is what I know about the lights on my 07. The bi-xenons have shutters and are auto leveling. The shutter blocks the upper portion of the light on low beam. On high beam the shutter moves back to reveal the full light. What I don't know is if the lights closest to the grill can be activated. The dealer told me that they are disabled for Canada and the US market, but are active in Europe. Does anyone know more about this, or better yet how to activate them. I would love to have them turned on on high beam. We have lots of long dark stretches of highway up here in the frozen north.
They activate when you pull the high beem lever towards you while in DRL mode. That is the only time the work. They are meant as "flash to pass" lights or to warn people of radar traps.
