I have scanned a Motor Trend Magazine road test of the car that got it all started way back when .. The 1983 GTI. I scanned them as jpeg's and attached them below. Its interesting to read and see how it was back then. The performance numbers are way slow by todays standards but in 1983 the GTI was actually as fast or faster than most any cars produced at that time. A few things to take notice of are the horsepower ratings and acceleration times. We really have come a long way haven't we? Also I noticed the minuscule 10 gallon gas tank. I doubt there is a car made today that only has a 10 gallon tank. Also there are 6 scanned pages so be sure and see them all. I know most people on this board have the new 2006 GTI (as well as myself) But I hope this will be interesting reading to all. It never hurts to know something about the history of your car.

thats pretty cool. i cant really read any of the specifications though its a little too small. it really is cool though to see how far along we are today with technology compared to less then 25 years ago.

Thanks. I made the pics fairly large. Maybe your browser is not enlarging the pics properly. I use Firefox as my browser. When I click the link to the pics it opens up another page with the picture inside. I can then click on the picture itself and it 'enlarges' to full size making it easily readable. If your browser wont make them large try saving the pics then opening them with your favorite picture veiwer. Hope that helps.

Also GTFly, the problem you might have is that Explorer opens the pics in a too small window (that's impossible to enlarge) and then resizes the pics to fit. Move your mouse over the pic and an icon will appear on the bottom right. Click to enlarge.

If you didn't know, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche was the man who desiged the Volkswagen Bug way back when in Germany, I don't know the rest of the history, but they may have still been collaborating in '83. If anybody does know the history, I'd like to know it.

I knew that Ferdinand Porsche designed the beatle for Hitler's Volkswagen and he must have kept designing cars for VW through the 50s cause a lot of their models looked like Porsche 356 variants, but they mentioned an Audi-Porsche division in the article, implying VW owned Porsche.

Ok , if you have knowledge , maybe you can help me

I have 3 Golf MK1 in my yard ,one`s a 1,6 diesel , one is a 1,3 petrol and then ....there`s this :`76 1,8L carbutaror GX.
It`s mine : and it`s a beast >!!! Honestly in 3rd gear i`m able to do burnouts with my handbrake pulled ( absolutely all the mechanical parts are in mint condition,and it was pretty expensive :-X. I`m interested in buyin` a Golf MK1 GTI ....but that means fuel injection...wich is not as brutal as a carburator... and yes it has 16 valves but it`s still a 1,6. In your opinion is my 1,8L carb GX better than a GTi ,and if noy , why?
There`s no doubt , no matter what i`m buyin` a GTI ,but i need your opinion. O0
