Hey guys,
I just got my GTI with the DSG and there's this guy at work with a 2003 Focus ZX3 with a Jackson Racing Supercharger. I'd like to know what my chances are with this guy. He "claims" to know everything about cars but I have a strong hunch that he's just bs'ing half the time like he does when he talks about non-car things. I don't know too much about superchargers and vehicle specs in general since this is my first sporty car (I used to drive an automatic Camry...lol) so I can't really argue with him even if he's bs'ing. Anyway, this guy is telling me that it should be a fairly close race. Is he right? Or just trying to scare me into thinking I won't beat him? He claims that the 03 ZX3 is lighter than the 07 GTI (which I have NOT been able to confirm). These are the spec's he's giving me (not sure if he got them from a reliable source or just pulled them out of somewhere):

2007 GTI
3100 lbs curb weight (4123 lbs Gross weight)
200 hp (@ crank)
207 lb-ft torque (@ crank)


2003 Focus ZX3
2598 lbs Curb Weight
est. 175-180 wheel horsepower
est. 165-170 lb-ft wheel torque


Can someone tell me what my chances are of beating him and shutting him up?
In other news....last night I raced another friend of mine who drives a Contour SVT and I smoked him.....so I'm hoping its something like that when I race this guy.....but any and ALL input is welcome.

well if he does have a s/c on his car thats another 40+ whp so i'd say he has you unless you get it chipped. But he will be pushing around 220whp and your pushins stock 185 whp est. Plus our car weights 500 pounds more that the mkiv becasue we have 2 steel rods running across our two doors to protect us from an accident.

Plus our car weights 500 pounds more that the mkiv becasue we have 2 steel rods running across our two doors to protect us from an accident.

When you say chipped, how do they work? And is there any specific brand/model/type I should consider? Any side effects to having a chip?

I had one try and pass me to cut me off and turn one day, and I'll tell you it never happened. And that was while driving a 4.0 straight six Wrangler... hahahahahhahahah

Yeah, I had a ZX3, and as I recall, Gunny is correct at 115 HP.

What kind of toon puts a super charger on a Focus? I don't think this guy is for real. You should be able to take him easily. I doubt if he really has a super charger even.

Yea, he is a toon, that's for sure. And if it doesn't end up snowing tomorrow, I'll probably race him tomorrow........as for him having a supercharger or not, he said he dropped about 2 G's on it....and I have personally heard the "scream" of the super charger as he takes off.....so i'm sure he has one, but its not necessary that he has the Jackson racing one.........i'll keep you guys posted. Thanks for all the input!

Lets also take into account a lack of gearing to transfer that "power" from the S/C to the pavement. The GTi at least is semi-geared for acceleration. The Focus? Geared for embarrassment... my 2 cents

as long as your car is broken in, just bounce it off the rev limiter everygear, and watch him disappear. i need to etch my new mirrors to say. "objects in mirror, tend to disappear". a focus. let us know how it goes. hell race him in the snow too. a zx3 doesn't have trac cont. haha.
