Hiya myfastgtiers. I wanted to make this thread to see what everyone thinks about the 1,000 mile break-in period. Now my car was the test driver so it had about 240 miles on it when I got it and I assume some people pushed the GTI during their test drives. So I really don't have the opportunity to do the 1,000 mi break-in. I asked my sales person if it needed the break-in period and of course he said no...

My question for this thread is, do you guys think the 1,000 mile break-in period is absolutely essential? Is my motor going to be slower because I didn't have the opportunity to do so?

I'll be sad if so. [help]

There's a break in period? Haha. But, seriously, in the "old" days they always said to baby the car during the first bit, but nowadays there is a lot of literature that says the engines are ready to go. Some even say that you should push it early. I wouldn't take it to the track just yet, but I wouldn't worry too much about low rpm shifts, etc. Be sensible and kind to it for a few more hundred miles. then rip the sh!t out of it!

So then it may be a good thing mine was a tester? Who doesn't rip the sh!t out of it when doing a test drive? I sure as he11 do.

That's helpful...
to answer your original question, don't bother with the 1,000 miles. I would say be safe and go easy on it till 500 or so then your good to go

Alright, thanks sir. I've been babying it a lot to see what kind of gas mileage I can get, with the occasional haul a$$ when getting on the highway. I've gotten my average consumption up to 38mpg on the highway and 31 in the city. I usually drive with a lot if rpm variations too so I think we'll be okay.

Right? I'm very pleased, my mother is too. She came along when I was car shopping and couldn't stop talking about getting a fuel efficient vehicle. I think the window sticker said 24 City and 31 Highway, so we're getting about 7 miles above that!

Agreed.

I've gotten 34mpg with mixed driving but had to consciously aim for it. That was pre-tune so?... don't see that happening again... hehe.

As far as break in goes I would be more concerned with properly bedding in the clutch and brakes than worrying about the engine. My .02

Properly bedding the clutch means? How do I go about doing that?

Doing this break-in stuff is such a pain in the ass, I figure since I started at 200 miles that it should be ready by 800. I called the dealership and asked the salespeople how the test drives went and if people really pushed the car or not. They said that I pushed it the hardest out of all of them and I barely pushed it, so thats great news. As long as they're not lying... :/ Excited to do this thang right though!!

They are salespeople; of course they lie. I think it's in their contract.

Don't worry about it. I did two launches in my car the night I bought it and I drove it 120 miles on the highway everyday for the first 20k miles, keeping it pretty much at the same rpms the whole time. I did none of the typical break in techniques. 40k miles and three years later, still running strong! Any issues I might have in the future, I would seriously doubt can be blamed on my lack of breaking it in.

Yeah, I'm hearing this more and more these days. I did some research and they say most new cars are broken in, in the factory. I don't know what to do lol.

I was once told that the cars are all "broken in" by the guys driving them off the dock to the crates or from the crates to the dealers. Even my Civic with 7 miles on it from Queens...I'm sure that dude slammed the car for all 7 miles.

I sure hope so, I don't want it to jeopardize the future longevity of my GTI. :/
