i have talked to a few buddies at vw and they said if I hone it and sleeve it I'm screwed I just thought I would ask on here to get some other opinions of people that have done it and their stories good or bad. I know it is normal for about 1/2 qt/oil change but I went through 5 in a 4.9 qt vehicle. Any other options besides just putting rings in and hoping for the best?

Have the Valve Cover checked out, not just the gasket but the cover itself.

I was going through 1 qt every 100 miles, yes...every 100 miles it needed another quart. I had replaced the turbo, DV valve, both PCV valves, and did compression tests (all 4 cyl w/in new spec). None of that did a bit of good.
I finally gave up and took it to the dealer for them to check out. They pulled the valve cover off and the internal baffles and channels were broken to hell. I was sucking all that oil through the VC into the manifold.
The valve cover on these engines is hollow and full of chambers and channels for the PCV system.
See my story and final solution here: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?6208303-FSI-Extreme-Oil-Consumption-Wits-end
And this excellent post on AudiZine that autopsies a valve cover: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...he-Valve-Cover-(Pics-Video)-2nd-oil-separator

Good luck.
