Hello everyone,
After trying everything I can think of besides taking my car to the shop, I am at a loss. My problem started simple enough with my airbag light coming on and then a few days later the steering wheel controls started to work intermittently. After doing a little research I found out the problem was a failing clockspring. I removed the old clockspring (after disconnecting the battery), found out its part number and ordered a new one from 1stvwparts.

I put the new clockspring in (pulling out the locking tab and making sure it did not move position), then put everything back together expecting a fixed car. As usual after you disconnect the battery the esp and steering wheel light came on and the airbag light was still on as well. I took the car out for a little ride as that is usually what it takes to make the esp and steeling wheel light go off, except they didn’t (but the steering wheel controls work again). After doing more research I found out that there was a procedure you might need to do in order to reset the steering angle sensor. At this point I finally bit the bullet and bought a vag-com cable for my car after wanting to for many years. I hooked it up ran the auto scan, reset the airbag light (which is staying off now) and then went about the process to reset the steering angle sensor, only problem was is that I wasn’t getting any reading from the sensor and upon looking at the auto-scan data again I noticed this little error which I can find little to no information on.

After that I now have the abs and brake lights on as well as the steering wheel(yellow) and esp. I have included the autoscan log below and left all the sections with error codes though from what I know the engine one is just letting me know that there are problems in the other parts of the car and the speaker ones are because I have an aftermarket amp hooked up to them. I have no clue what the drivers side door lock one is about but it works fine. Does anyone know what could be the problem, my only guess is a defective clockspring angle sensor, but it could be something stupid I did without knowing. If you need any more info feel free to ask. What did Ross tech wiki say?

Using the ross tech wiki I had found this page http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/00778 but it does not have the code 014 - Defective that I am getting.
To provide some more information referring to some of the general troubleshooting options on that page. "With steering wheel level, wheels pointing straight ahead, make sure G85 is reporting 0 degrees +/- 5 degrees. If a reading of +360 or - 360 degrees is found. Remove steering wheel and turn clock spring 1 turn in direction needed to fix. See repair manual." On my car it is reporting 0 but that is only because it is not receiving a signal at all.
Later on down the page there is this. "Check Steering Angle Sensor (G85) Installation Position" I do not quite understand this, is this just another way of saying the same thing as my first quote, that the clockspring was installed out of center or is it referring to some other way the steering angle sensor can be positioned that I do not know of? Am I correct in thinking that the steering angle sensor is inside the clockspring?

I tried the tire pressure idea as a long shot to no avail. I have done the procedure listed on that page many times and in many different forms that can be found throughout the ross-tech wiki and they never do anything.

I am pretty sure the answer lies in figuring out what "00778 - Steering Angle Sensor (G85) 014 - Defective" means. In an attempt to try a few more things for myself, I installed the old clockspring again and I am getting the same errors for it that I am getting for the new one (in addition to old problems that clockspring had). This leads me to believe that the problems has to be either in another part of the car (how is that possible when nothing was done outside of changing the clockspring and everything was fine beforehand) or that there is some weird activation that needs to be done when replacing a new clockspring that is not listed anywhere.

Start the vehicle.
Turn the steering wheel one turn to the right and one turn to the left.
Drive in a short distance straight line on a level surface at a speed not higher than 20 km/h.
If the steering wheel is straight during the test drive then stop the vehicle with the wheels pointed straight.
Ensure that the steering wheel is not moved again.
Keep the engine running and do not switch off the ignition.
System voltage at least 12.0 V.

I found out the sensor is not part of the clockspring but a small piece directly behind it. The only way I found this out is by taking it out and looking up the part number. There really isn't much information out there regarding this problem as well as the clockspring and sensor in regards to the gti/golf mkv. The part is in the mail now and here's hoping that this will be the end of my problems. Thanks to all of those who helped me.

Sorry for never following up on this, other junk happened in my life and it didn't cross my mind till I was going through the threads today. After receiving the new steering wheel sensor, it just slides into place (getting the old one out was another story and I can't even explain how to get it out properly, a small hook and time mixed with cussing) I then put the rest of the steering wheel back together and the problem was fixed. (I had done a lot of troubleshooting with vagcom and had to do a steering realignment test and reset the brakes/traction control but I think that was all vagcom related and my own fault, I don't think you would need to do this if you just replaced the part)
I hope this helps anyone that may have this problem, all in all its a very easy fix and so is the clockspring if you need to do that at any time as well.

Hello everyone,

I have the exact same problem on my 2003 Jetta 1.8T. I have tried taking the sensor apart and cleaning it but did not help. I notice there are 4 photo sensors inside and 4 photo emitting diodes (infra red) that are used to monitor steering wheel movements. I have experience with electronics, but still need more information in order to troubleshoot this particular issue. The VCDS is reporting that the sensor is Defective! The sensor has 6 pins and I have not checked if the sensor even has the supply voltage (I assume it should be +5V and GND on two of the leads). I have ordered a replacement and we will see if that is the problem or something else. I will post in a week when the sensor arrives. It would be nice to actually fix the sensor. It appears to be very expensive.
